What is Podiatry?

Podiatry is an Allied Health profession that is dedicated to diagnosis, managing, preventing and treating a variety of medical conditions that affect the foot and lower limbs. These may include skin and nail problems, foot and ankle injuries or complications associated with diabetes. Podiatrists are highly skilled and trained in the management of musculoskeletal injuries using researched based proven modalities and individualised management plans to ensure patients can return to their desired activities.

How is Walk On Podiatry different from other podiatry clinics?

At Walk On Podiatry we genuinely care about your injury or foot problem and we strive to provide an outstanding experience when it comes to looking after your feet or the diagnosis and treatment of your musculoskeletal injury. All of our podiatrists are highly educated and trained in some of the country’s best universities. They have many years of professional experience and are constantly improving their skills and techniques with on-going education. The latest research is used to develop your injury treatment plan and your appointments will take place in your own private room in our clinic. We work closely with your doctor, physiotherapist, myotherapist, personal trainer, team coach or employer to help you through your injury and enable you to return to your best as soon as possible. More importantly we listen to your needs and goals and we are here to help you.

Do I need to see my Doctor before seeing a Podiatrist?

No. In Australia you are NOT required to have a doctors referral to see a Podiatrist. However your podiatrist will normally ask who your doctor is so your doctor may be informed about your condition and progress. If your problem is related to DVA, EPC, Workcover, TAC or you are an serving member of the ADF you will require a GP referral.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not usually necessary unless you are claiming the costs of your treatment through DVA, Workcover, TAC, EPC or ADF. If you have any questions regarding claiming for your appointment, please contact reception on 8790 3755.

Do you have onsite parking?

At our Narre Warren, Pakenham and Hastings location there is designated parking at the rear of the clinic for our patients which you are welcome to use. Should these parking spaces be unavailable, or for parking at our Chelsea location, there is ample on street parking.

How much will it cost?

With the appropriate Podiatry cover, your consultation may be covered under private health insurance and in some instances may be partially covered by Medicare when referred by your GP. To find out the value of a consult, or to make an appointment please phone our reception staff.

How do I make an appointment?

How long is an appointment?

Most appointments at Walk On Podiatry are 30 minutes in duration and up to 60 minutes for an Initial Biomechanical Assessment. We feel that this time is necessary to ensure we accurately and thoroughly assess and diagnose your injury as well as educate you on injury and the process required for recovery. It is important you arrive early to ensure we can provide you with the very best in care and management.

How many appointments will I need?

The number of appointments required for an injury will vary from person to person. Some people only require one or two treatments, while others may need further guidance and a more intensive program over a period of months. Your recovery can be influenced by a number of factors and so at Walk On Podiatry our aim is to not only provide you with management plan to improve your symptoms but eliminate the causative factors and prevent re occurrence and re-injury.

Will I be sold orthotics?

The cause of your foot and leg pain can vary and hence not all injuries require an orthotic device to help manage the symptoms you are experiencing. A thorough assessment will be conducted by your podiatrist to ensure a management plan specific to your injury can be developed. Your podiatrist will assess your feet using our advanced video and treadmill gait analysis software; enabling them to accurately assess, diagnose and then educate you on the causes of your injury. All feet and legs are different, so your podiatrist can provide pre-fabricated or custom made orthotics if it is required to manage our injury.

How do I pay?

You will need to pay for your consultation at the time of your appointment and can be made with cash, debit card or credit card (Visa or Mastercard). We have a HICAPS payment terminal, so if you have extras cover on your private health insurance that includes podiatry, an on the spot claim can be made so you will only need to cover the gap fee. Please remember to bring your private health insurance card with you to take full advantage of HICAPs at the time of your appointment. EPC claims will need to be processed in full and you can submit your claim to Medicare. Alternatively if you have a debit card your Medicare rebate can be claimed on the spot. We accept all DVA cards however if you have a white card, you will need to confirm your condition is covered by DVA.

Are rebates available?

Rebates are available on all of our services through your private health insurance, depending on your level of cover. If your health fund is not registered for HICAPS, we will provide you with a receipt to manually submit your claim. Please be aware that amounts vary between insurance companies and we recommend that you contact your insurer for more information regarding your individual cover.

Is it okay if I am not an athlete?

Of course! Although our podiatrists are skilled and experienced when it comes to working with high level athletes, the majority of our patients are from the general population. So whether you’re a casual walker or want to run a marathon, we can help you look after your feet.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

If for some reason you need to cancel or postpone your appointment we prefer 48 hours notice, however a minimum of 24 hours notice is required or a cancellation fee will be charged (and we hate doing that). The appointment time has been set aside especially for you and if you fail to attend an appointment or fail to cancel within the required notice period then we can’t offer that time to someone on our waiting list. We realise that sometime appointments made in advance can be difficult to remember, so to help you we will often send a reminder text message a few days prior to your appointment.

What should I bring/wear?

If you are coming to see us for routine foot care, all you will need is comfortable fitting clothes and shoes that are easy to remove. To be able to assess an injury accurately we need to see the area in question so a pair of lose fitting shorts or pants are a great idea. Also please bring along your most common footwear, orthotics, any referrals, images or reports that might help your podiatrist treat your injury.
